Spring Forward with in-season Fruit and VegetablesAs we dive deeper into Spring a wide variety of fruits and vegetables come into season. Seasonal produce is beneficial for a variety of reasons: in-season produce is fresher and tastes better, it is fresher with a higher nutritional value, and seasonal produce is often less expensive. A great nutrition goal for the month of April is to improve your consumption of fruits and vegetables, particularly ones in season. A diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables can improve our healthy in multiple ways. Vegetables and fruits are filled with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Vegetables and fruits are low in calories, but high in fiber, so we are able to eat large servings of them at meal times resulting in being full of nutrients but not overdoing the calories! It is best to eat fruits and vegetables in a variety of colors, as different colors symbolize different benefits.

April Healthy Habit: improve your consumption of fruits and vegetables by either:

  • Trying to incorporate a variety of fruits and vegetables. Check out your local farmers market or grocery store for in season produce and look to try new fruits and vegetables found in a variety of shades for a nutrient dense diet.
  • Include either one fruit or vegetable at every meal. Sneak vegetables into smoothies, top fruit onto Greek Yogurt or salads, invest in a Spiralizer and look for fun and different ways to eat vegetables (zucchini noodles!). Aim to make ½ of your plate made of up fruits and/or vegetables.
